Inventory availability (by location) sync to Variant Metafield

This ticket https://tasks.mechanic.dev/tag-products-as-in-or-out-of-stock-by-location-id is great to sync products & collections based on inventory by location.
It would be fantastic if this task could be extended to sync not only to product tags, but also to
Variant Metafields
as well so that I can use the facet filtering, something like:"Available"
|-- Nationwide shipping
|-- Florida Pickup
|-- California Pickup
I imagine this to be a variant metafield of type
Single line text (List)
Current workaround, I guess my best option is to chain https://tasks.mechanic.dev/copy-prefixed-tags-to-metafields after above task, which does make the setup appear a bit fragile
